Gaselys

Trader

Energy Trading (gas, electricity, oil & oil products, coal and CO2)

Gaselys traders are active in European energy markets, including natural gas, electricity, oil and oil products, and since 2005, coal and CO2. Our traders are either market makers or proprietary traders.

Market maker

• Manages "market-making" portfolios
He prices offers and acts as an intermediary between sellers (e.g. producers) and buyers (e.g. consumers).
He executes a trade even if he does not find a buyer or seller (or "opposite position") in the market; his job being to keep this risk until the trade can be completed. The difference between the purchase and sales prices constitutes his profit. He also:
• undertakes statistical and fundamental market research
• helps develop new market-making activities by contributing to Gaselys business development projects
• manages and monitors exposure to currency risk and hedges this risk in the market or internally
• contributes to asset arbitrage and optimisation
• helps improve the IT, legal, regulatory and operational resources used for trading.

Proprietary trader

Also known as the speculative or directional trader, he takes a buy or sell position in the market that he believes will be profitable. There are two main types of proprietary trading strategies. The first is based on a fundamental approach (i.e. the economic factors that underlie price formation), while the second involves statistical methods involving the analysis of historical price data.
